Delayed Mechanical Response to Chemical Kinetics in Self-Oscillating Hydrogels Driven by the Belousov–Zhabotinsky Reaction

چکیده

We show experimentally that chemical and mechanical self-oscillations in Belousov–Zhabotinsky hydrogels are inherently asynchronous, is, there is a detectable delay swelling–deswelling response after change the redox state. This phenomenon observable many previous experimental studies potentially has far-reaching implications for functionality time of material future applications; however, so far, it not been quantified or reported systematically. Here, we provide comprehensive qualitative quantitative description chemical-to-mechanical delay, propose to explain as consequence slow nonequilibrium dynamics polymer material. Specifically, standard hydrogel pieces large enough transport processes, example, counterion migration water diffusion, cannot occur instantaneously throughout entire gel piece, opposed theoretical considerations. As result, volume may be governed by characteristic time, which leads emergence oscillation. supported our calculations.

Mechanical Resuscitation of Chemical Oscillations in BelousovZhabotinsky Gels

The conversion of mechanical to chemical energy is a natural phenomenon that few synthetic materials have been able to mimic robustly. The fi rst demonstration of mechanical triggering of Belousov–Zhabotinsky (BZ) oscillations is presented in N -isopropylacrylamideco -Ru(bpy) 3 gels for which the oscillatory nature of the BZ reaction can be visualized via periodic changes in color. It is demons...

Chaos In Oscillating Chemical Reactions: The Peroxidase-Oxidase Reaction

The peroxidase-oxidase (PO) reaction is an important example of how oscillating reactions arise in living organisms. The reaction is important mathematically because exhibits many characteristics of chaos. Of these characteristics, sensitive dependence on initial conditions illustrates how predicting the future state of the PO reaction is next to impossible. For this reason, chaotic behavior in...

Chemical Reaction Kinetics: Mathematical Underpinnings

Mathematical modeling and simulation of biochemical reaction networks facilitates our understanding of metabolic and signaling processes. For closed, well-mixed reaction systems, it is straightforward to derive kinetic equations that govern the concentrations of the reactants and products. The usual way of deriving kinetic equations involves application of the principle of conservation of mass ...

Structure and Mechanical Response of Protein Hydrogels Reinforced by Block Copolymer Self-Assembly.

A strategy for responsively toughening an injectable protein hydrogel has been implemented by incorporating an associative protein as the midblock in triblock copolymers with thermoresponsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) endblocks, producing materials with a low yield stress necessary for injectability and durability required for load-bearing applications post-injection. Responsive rein...
